Best Practices for Using Trading Robots (EAs) Safely
A professional guide to using expert advisors safely: risk management, VPS selection, strategy diversification, and protecting your trading deposit.
Best Practices for Using Trading Robots (EAs) Safely
Trading robots (EAs) can be powerful automation tools, provided you take the right approach. This article brings together established practices from professional traders to help you avoid common mistakes and protect your capital as far as possible.
Golden rules for using EAs safely
Rule #1: Never risk more than 2% per trade
This fundamental risk management rule protects your deposit from being wiped out.
Why 2%?
At 2% risk per trade, you can withstand 50 consecutive losing trades and lose only 100% of the deposit. In practice, 50 losses in a row are extremely unlikely.
Editor's note: The source's calculation adds losses linearly. When each loss is a fixed fraction of the remaining balance, losses compound; the quoted 50 trades and 100% do not describe that model. A fixed risk percentage also does not guarantee protection from an account wipeout, and losing streaks depend on the strategy rather than a universal probability.
Position size calculation:
Safe lot size = (Deposit × Risk%) / (StopLoss in pips × Pip value)
Example:
Deposit: $5,000
Risk: 2% = $100 per trade
StopLoss: 40 pips
Pip value (for EURUSD, lot size 1.0): $10
Lot size = ($5,000 × 0.02) / (40 × $10) = $100 / $400 = 0.25 lots
EA settings:
UseMoneyManagement = true
Risk = 2.0 // 2% risk per trade
FixedLot = 0.0 // Do not use a fixed lot size
Rule #2: Diversify your strategies
Do not put all your eggs in one basket!
A single strategy can stop working when market conditions change. Use a portfolio approach:
Recommended capital allocation:
Account 1 (40%): Conservative trend-following EA
- Risk 1.5% per trade
- Slow but steady growth
- Low drawdown (10-15%)
Account 2 (30%): Scalping EA
- Risk 2% per trade
- Frequent trades, moderate profit
- Moderate drawdown (15-20%)
Account 3 (20%): Martingale EA (with limits!)
- Risk 1% per trade
- High returns, high risk
- Strict limits on lot doubling
Reserve (10%): Cash
- For adding funds to accounts during drawdowns
Currency pairs:
Do not trade only EURUSD. Diversify:
- Majors: EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY
- Crosses: EURGBP, EURJPY, GBPJPY
- Commodity currencies: AUDUSD, NZDUSD, USDCAD
Important: Use uncorrelated pairs. Avoid trading EURUSD and GBPUSD simultaneously with identical strategies because they are strongly correlated.
Rule #3: Use a VPS for stability
Why is a VPS critical for EAs?
An EA needs uninterrupted operation 24/7. A computer or internet outage can lead to:
- ❌ Missed trades (lost profits)
- ❌ Positions left open (uncontrolled losses)
- ❌ Incorrect execution of the EA’s logic
VPS benefits:
✅ 99.9% uptime: no local power/internet outages
✅ Low latency (ping < 5ms): fast order execution
✅ Failure protection: automatic restarts after errors
✅ Remote access: manage the EA from any device
Recommended VPS providers:
| Provider | Price/month | Ping | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forex VPS | $15-30 | <5ms | ✅ Best for forex |
| AWS Lightsail | $5-10 | 10-20ms | ✅ Budget option |
| Vultr | $6-12 | 10-15ms | ✅ Balance of price and quality |
| Contabo | €5-10 | 20-30ms | ⚠️ Cheap, but higher latency |
Editor's note: Provider prices, latency, uptime claims and the broker conditions listed later in this source article have not been independently verified for this English edition. Actual terms depend on the service, location, account type and contracting entity; the quoted figures do not establish current availability.
Minimum VPS requirements:
CPU: 1-2 cores
RAM: 2-4 GB
SSD: 20-40 GB
OS: Windows Server 2019/2022
Ping to broker: <20ms
VPS setup:
- Install MetaTrader on the VPS
- Configure the terminal to launch at startup
- Enable all EAs
- Check the logs through Remote Desktop
- Configure disconnection alerts (email/Telegram)
Rule #4: Monitoring and oversight
Check your EA every day!
Even with a VPS and automation, you must monitor its operation:
Daily checklist:
✅ Open the MetaTrader terminal
✅ Check EA status (smiling face 😊 in the chart corner)
✅ Check open positions (number, direction, floating profit/loss)
✅ Check balance and Equity (current account status)
✅ Check Expert logs (the Experts tab at the bottom of the terminal)
✅ Check drawdown: it should not exceed 20-30%
Weekly checklist:
✅ Analyze the week’s profit/loss
✅ Compare results with the Strategy Tester
✅ Check that the strategy operates as described
✅ Assess the ratio of winning/losing trades
✅ Check average profit and average loss
Monthly checklist:
✅ Check monthly ROI (Return on Investment)
✅ Compare with a benchmark (market index, other strategies)
✅ Assess whether parameters need re-optimization
✅ Analyze large losses (>5% of the deposit)
✅ Update the EA to the latest version (if available)
Use a trading journal:
Keep records in Excel/Google Sheets:
| Date | EA | Pair | Trades | Profit/Loss | Drawdown | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024-01-15 | TrendMaster | EURUSD | 8 | +$120 | 12% | Uptrend, excellent |
| 2024-01-16 | Scalper Pro | GBPUSD | 25 | -$40 | 14% | Range, many false signals |
| 2024-01-17 | TrendMaster | EURUSD | 5 | +$85 | 10% | Trend continuation |
Choosing a reliable broker for EAs
Brokers differ in their suitability for algorithmic trading!
Critical parameters:
1. Order execution type
| Type | Description | Suitable for EAs |
|---|---|---|
| ECN/STP | Direct market access, orders routed to liquidity providers | ✅ Best choice |
| Market Maker | The broker acts as counterparty to trades | ⚠️ Potential conflicts of interest |
| Hybrid | A combination of ECN and MM | ✅ Acceptable |
Why ECN/STP?
- No conflict of interest
- Scalping and high-frequency trading allowed
- Better order execution
2. Spreads
For scalping strategies:
- Minimal spreads are critical!
- EURUSD: 0.5-1.5 pips
- GBPUSD: 1.0-2.0 pips
For medium-term strategies:
- Spread is less critical
- EURUSD: 1.5-3.0 pips is acceptable
Checking spreads:
Open a chart → the “Market Watch” tab → check the Bid/Ask difference at different times:
- London session (10:00-18:00 Moscow time): lowest spreads
- Asian session (02:00-08:00 Moscow time): highest spreads
- News events: spreads widen by 5-10 times!
3. Slippage
The difference between the requested price and the order’s execution price.
Acceptable values:
- Scalping: 0-1 pip
- Medium-term trading: 1-3 pips
How to check:
Configure this in the EA:
MaxSlippage = 3 // Maximum permitted slippage
If the EA logs “Slippage too high,” change brokers!
4. Permission to use EAs
Important: Some brokers prohibit EAs or restrict:
- Scalping (trades shorter than 5 minutes)
- High-frequency trading (>100 trades per day)
- Arbitrage
- Latency arbitrage
Check the broker’s Terms & Conditions before opening an account!
5. Execution quality
Quality metrics:
Execution Speed: <100ms (lower is better)
Requotes: 0-1% (requotes should be rare)
Stop Out Level: 20-50% (margin call level)
Recommended brokers for EAs:
| Broker | Type | Min. deposit | EURUSD spread | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IC Markets | ECN | $200 | 0.6 pips | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Pepperstone | ECN/STP | $200 | 0.7 pips | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| FBS | STP | $10 | 1.5 pips | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Exness | Hybrid | $10 | 1.0 pip | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Roboforex | ECN | $10 | 1.2 pips | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
Risk management: advanced strategies
Strategy #1: Fixed-percentage risk
The simplest and most reliable method.
Settings:
UseMoneyManagement = true
RiskPercent = 2.0
MaxRiskPerDay = 6.0 // No more than 6% risk per day (3 trades)
Advantages:
- ✅ Automatically adapts to the deposit size
- ✅ Protects against large losses
- ✅ Easy to configure
Drawbacks:
- ⚠️ Slow deposit growth at low risk
Strategy #2: Fixed fractional sizing (Kelly-based)
Uses the Kelly formula to calculate optimal position size.
Kelly formula:
Kelly % = (Win Rate × Avg Win - (1 - Win Rate) × Avg Loss) / Avg Loss
Example:
Win Rate: 60%
Avg Win: $100
Avg Loss: $50
Kelly % = (0.6 × 100 - 0.4 × 50) / 50 = (60 - 20) / 50 = 0.8 (80% of capital)
Important: Never use the full Kelly %! Divide it by 2-4:
SafeKelly = Kelly% / 4 = 80% / 4 = 20% risk per trade
Editor's note: The Kelly example and its conversion to 20% risk are not a reliable universal position-sizing rule. The formula, assumptions and meaning of the fraction need review; neither the label SafeKelly nor dividing the result establishes that this risk is safe. No replacement risk percentage is prescribed here.
Advantages:
- ✅ Mathematically optimal position size
- ✅ Maximizes capital growth
Drawbacks:
- ⚠️ Requires accurate statistics (at least 100+ trades)
- ⚠️ High volatility
Strategy #3: Martingale with limits
Classic martingale (dangerous!):
Loss → double the lot size → loss → double again → ... → DEPOSIT WIPED OUT
Safe martingale:
Editor's note: This is the source's label, not a safety endorsement. Limiting escalation can cap part of the exposure but cannot make martingale risk-free or guarantee recovery. Withdrawing capital likewise does not remove the risk of losing the funds that remain in the account. Investor.gov explains that every investment involves risk.
Limit the maximum number of doublings:
UseMartingale = true
MartingaleMultiplier = 1.5 // NOT 2.0! More conservative
MaxMartingaleSteps = 3 // Maximum 3 doublings
Example:
Trade 1: Lot 0.01 → Loss -$10
Trade 2: Lot 0.015 (×1.5) → Loss -$15
Trade 3: Lot 0.0225 (×1.5) → Loss -$22.5
Trade 4: Lot 0.01 (RESET) → Profit +$10
Important:
- Use only on accounts with capital >$5,000
- The risk of a total wipeout remains higher than with conventional strategies
- Not recommended for beginners
Strategy #4: Anti-Martingale (Pyramiding)
The idea: Increase position size after winning trades rather than losing ones.
UseAntiMartingale = true
ProfitMultiplier = 1.2 // Increase lot size by 20% after a profit
MaxPyramidingSteps = 5
Example:
Trade 1: Lot 0.01 → Profit +$10
Trade 2: Lot 0.012 (×1.2) → Profit +$12
Trade 3: Lot 0.0144 (×1.2) → Profit +$14.4
Trade 4: Lot 0.01 (RESET after a loss)
Advantages:
- ✅ Safer than martingale
- ✅ Maximizes profits during successful periods
Drawbacks:
- ⚠️ Requires a high Win Rate (>55%)
The psychology of using EAs
Mistake #1: Panicking during drawdowns
Typical situation:
Days 1-10: +$500 profit — “The EA works brilliantly!”
Days 11-12: -$300 drawdown — “The EA is broken. I’m switching it off!”
Days 13-20: +$800 profit — “Damn, I should have left it on...”
Solution:
✅ Trust statistics rather than emotions
If an EA achieved a Profit Factor of 1.8 in the tester and on a demo account, a short-term drawdown of 20% is normal.
Editor's note: Profit factor alone does not establish a normal or acceptable drawdown. Stopping rules should follow the tested strategy and the account's actual risk limits; the source's percentages are not universal thresholds.
✅ Set triggers for stopping the EA:
Stop the EA only when:
- Drawdown > 30% (a predefined level)
- The EA’s strategy changes (it trades differently from its description)
- Technical errors occur (the EA does not open trades, or errors appear in the logs)
Do NOT stop the EA because of:
- ❌ A few consecutive losing trades (this is normal!)
- ❌ A temporary drawdown of 10-20% (statistically expected)
- ❌ Fear or a “bad feeling”
Mistake #2: Changing settings frequently
Typical situation:
Week 1: Lot 0.1, SL 30 → drawdown 15%
Week 2: Lot 0.05, SL 50 → profit 5%
Week 3: Lot 0.2, SL 20 → drawdown 25%
Week 4: “Nothing works!” 😠
Solution:
✅ Choose settings and LEAVE THEM ALONE for at least 1 month
Constant re-optimization creates chaos. Give the strategy time to produce results.
✅ Use A/B testing:
To compare settings:
- Account A: Settings #1 (1 month)
- Account B: Settings #2 (1 month)
- Choose the better result
Mistake #3: Greed (“I’ll increase the lot size by a factor of 2!”)
Typical situation:
The EA earns $200 per month → “Not enough! I’ll increase the lot size by a factor of 3!”
Next week: -$1,500 → Deposit wiped out
Solution:
✅ Increase risk gradually
A safe way to scale up:
Deposit $1,000 → Risk 2% = $20 per trade
Deposit $2,000 → Risk 2% = $40 per trade
Deposit $5,000 → Risk 2% = $100 per trade
The cash amount at risk increases automatically as the deposit grows!
✅ Do NOT increase the fixed risk percentage:
❌ Wrong: “I’ll increase risk from 2% to 5%”
✅ Right: “I’ll keep risk at 2% and let the deposit grow”
Protection against technical failures
Problem #1: Internet outage
Consequences:
- The EA will not close open positions at Take Profit / Stop Loss
- Floating losses can grow uncontrollably
Editor's note: The outage warning applies to EA-managed or virtual exits. Stop Loss and Take Profit orders already accepted on the broker's server do not require the local terminal to stay connected, although execution prices and outcomes remain subject to market conditions.
Solution:
✅ Use a VPS (see Rule #3 above)
✅ Set server-side Stop Loss / Take Profit:
Even if the EA uses virtual SL/TP, set server-side levels:
UseHardStopLoss = true // Actual SL on the broker’s server
HardStopLoss = 100 // Maximum loss of 100 points
✅ Use mobile notifications:
Configure MetaTrader Mobile to receive notifications about:
- Open trades
- Floating profit/loss reaching specified levels
- The EA disconnecting
Problem #2: MetaTrader terminal failure
Consequences:
- The EA stops running
- Open positions are left unmanaged
Solution:
✅ Configure automatic terminal startup:
Windows:
1. Win + R → shell:startup
2. Create a terminal.exe shortcut in the Startup folder
3. Shortcut properties → add the /portable parameter
✅ Use third-party watchdog scripts:
A script checks every 5 minutes whether MetaTrader is running and restarts it if necessary.
Problem #3: Terminal update
Consequences:
- The terminal restarts
- The EA is disabled
Solution:
✅ Disable automatic updates:
MetaTrader → Tools → Options → Server tab
❌ Uncheck “Allow automatic updates”
Update the terminal manually outside active trading hours (weekends, the Asian session).
Professional trader’s checklist
Use this checklist to assess readiness to launch an EA:
Account preparation:
- Opened an account with a reliable ECN/STP broker
- Minimum deposit of $1,000+ (less means excessive risk)
- Installed MetaTrader on a VPS with ping <20ms
- Configured notifications (email/Telegram/mobile)
EA configuration:
- Backtested the EA on at least 1-2 years of history
- Tested the EA on a demo account for 2-4 weeks
- Profit Factor > 1.5
- Maximum Drawdown < 30%
- Set risk at no more than 2% per trade
- Set server-side Stop Loss levels
- Limited the maximum number of trades per day
Risk management:
- Defined the maximum acceptable loss (for example, -30% = stop the EA)
- Prepared reserve capital (10-20% of the deposit)
- Diversified: using 2-3 different EAs on different pairs
- Avoiding martingale or limiting it to 3 steps
- Trading journal ready (Excel/Google Sheets)
Monitoring:
- Established daily monitoring (30 minutes per day)
- Set triggers for stopping the EA
- Prepared an action plan for drawdown >20%
- Visually tracking the balance curve
- Comparing live account and tester results
Psychology:
- Prepared for drawdowns of 15-25% (this is normal!)
- Committed to leaving settings unchanged for at least 1 month
- Committed to not increasing risk after losses
- Committed to not disabling the EA during short-term drawdowns
Real-world example: launching an EA correctly
Case study: Alexey, a trader with a $5,000 deposit
Step 1: Choosing a broker
Alexey chose IC Markets (an ECN broker):
- EURUSD spread: 0.6 pips
- Commission: $7 per lot
- Slippage: <1 pip
- Free VPS with a deposit >$5,000
Step 2: Testing the EA
The “TrendMaster” EA was tested:
- History: 2020-2023 (3 years)
- Profit Factor: 1.72 ✅
- Max Drawdown: 18% ✅
- Demo account: 4 weeks, +$420 profit ✅
Step 3: Risk management configuration
Deposit: $5,000
Risk per trade: 2% = $100
UseMoneyManagement: true
RiskPercent: 2.0
MaxOpenOrders: 3
MaxDailyTrades: 5
Step 4: Diversification
Alexey divided the capital:
- $3,000 (60%): TrendMaster on EURUSD
- $1,500 (30%): Scalper Pro on GBPUSD
- $500 (10%): Reserve
Step 5: Launch and monitoring
Week 1: +$180 (EURUSD), +$90 (GBPUSD) = +$270 (+5.4%)
Week 2: -$120 (EURUSD), +$40 (GBPUSD) = -$80 (-1.6%)
Week 3: +$200 (EURUSD), +$110 (GBPUSD) = +$310 (+6.2%)
Week 4: +$150 (EURUSD), -$60 (GBPUSD) = +$90 (+1.8%)
Monthly total: +$590 (+11.8% ROI)
What Alexey did correctly:
✅ Chose a reliable broker with low spreads
✅ Thoroughly tested the EA (3 years of history + 4 weeks on demo)
✅ Risked 2% per trade
✅ Diversified capital (2 EAs, 2 currency pairs)
✅ Did not panic during the drawdown in week 2
✅ Kept a trading journal
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
❌ Mistake: “I downloaded an EA and immediately ran it live”
Consequence: Losing the deposit in a few days
Solution:
- Backtest (at least 1 year)
- Demo account (at least 2 weeks)
- Micro account with $100-200 (another 1-2 weeks)
- Only then use the main account
❌ Mistake: “I increased the lot size after losses to win it back”
Consequence: Unrestricted martingale = a wiped-out deposit
Solution:
- Never increase risk after losses
- Use a fixed risk percentage
- If you want martingale, limit it to a maximum of 3 steps
❌ Mistake: “I traded without a VPS and my computer switched off”
Consequence: Unmanaged open positions and large losses
Solution:
- Always use a VPS ($15-30 per month)
- Set server-side Stop Loss levels at the broker
❌ Mistake: “I ran 5 EAs on one account”
Consequence: Conflicts, excessive risk and chaos
Solution:
- A maximum of 2-3 EAs per account
- Different currency pairs
- Different Magic Numbers
- Combined risk no higher than 5-10%
Conclusion
Using trading robots safely requires discipline, risk management and ongoing monitoring. Follow these principles:
