The instructions cover both MT4 and MT5.

# How to Install an EA (Expert Advisor) in MetaTrader 4/5: Step-by-Step Guide

Trading robots (Expert Advisors, or EAs) are powerful tools for automating forex trading. Before an EA can start generating profits, however, it must be installed correctly in the MetaTrader terminal. This article walks through the complete EA installation process for MT4 and MT5.

What is an Expert Advisor (EA)?

An Expert Advisor is a program written in MQL4 (for MetaTrader 4) or MQL5 (for MetaTrader 5) that automatically analyzes the market and trades according to a defined algorithm. EA files have the .ex4 or .ex5 extension.

Requirements before installation

Before you begin, make sure:

  • ✅ MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5 is installed
  • ✅ You downloaded the EA file from a reliable source (such as TradEApro)
  • ✅ Your antivirus is not blocking .ex4 or .ex5 files
  • ✅ You have administrator rights on your computer

Step-by-step EA installation in MetaTrader 4

Step 1: Open the MetaTrader 4 data folder

  1. Launch MetaTrader 4
  2. In the top menu, select File → Open Data Folder
  3. The terminal's file folder will open

Alternative: Press Ctrl + Shift + D

Step 2: Copy the EA file

  1. In the folder that opens, navigate to MQL4 → Experts
  2. Copy your EA file (with the .ex4 extension) into this folder
  3. If the EA includes several files, copy all of them

Important: Do not rename the EA file when copying it!

Step 3: Restart MetaTrader 4

Close and reopen MetaTrader 4 to refresh the list of available expert advisors.

Step 4: Find the EA in Navigator

  1. Open the Navigator window (Ctrl + N)
  2. Expand Expert Advisors
  3. Your EA should appear in the list

Step 5: Attach the EA to a chart

  1. Open a chart for the required currency pair
  2. Drag and drop the EA from Navigator onto the chart
  3. The EA settings window will open

Step 6: Configure the settings

  1. On the Common tab, make sure these options are checked:

    • ☑️ Allow live trading
    • ☑️ Allow DLL imports (if required)
  2. On the Inputs tab, configure:

    • Lot size
    • Stop Loss and Take Profit
    • Other EA parameters
  3. Click OK

Step 7: Enable automated trading

Find the AutoTrading button on the terminal's top toolbar and make sure it is enabled (green).

Done! A status icon will appear in the chart's upper-right corner:

  • 😊 — the EA is working correctly
  • 😐 — the EA is loaded, but automated trading is disabled
  • ❌ — an EA error has occurred

Installing an EA in MetaTrader 5

Installation in MT5 is similar to MT4, with a few differences:

Differences in MT5:

  1. Folder path: MQL5 → Experts (instead of MQL4)
  2. File extension: .ex5 (instead of .ex4)
  3. Interface: The window design is slightly different

All other steps are the same as in the MT4 instructions.

Common problems and solutions

The EA does not appear in the list

Solution:

  1. Check that the file is in the correct folder (MQL4/Experts or MQL5/Experts)
  2. Restart the terminal
  3. Make sure the file has the .ex4 or .ex5 extension

A sad face ☹️ appears on the chart

Solution:

  1. Check the logs (the Experts tab at the bottom of the terminal)
  2. Make sure automated trading is enabled (the AutoTrading button)
  3. Check the EA settings (right-click the chart → Expert Advisors → Properties)

The EA does not open trades

Solution:

  1. Make sure live trading is allowed in the EA settings
  2. Check the lot size (the account may have insufficient funds)
  3. Make sure your broker allows automated trading

Antivirus blocks the EA

Solution:

  1. Add the MetaTrader folder to your antivirus exclusions
  2. Download EAs only from trusted sources
  3. Scan the file for viruses before installation

Checking the EA is working

After installation, check the expert advisor:

  1. Check the logs: EA messages should appear in the Experts tab
  2. Check the status: the face in the chart corner should be smiling 😊
  3. Test on demo: test the EA on a demo account before using it live
  4. Check open positions: make sure the EA opens trades according to its strategy

Safety recommendations

  • ⚠️ Always test an EA on a demo account before using it live
  • ⚠️ Download EAs only from trusted websites (such as TradEApro)
  • ⚠️ Check other traders' reviews before using an EA
  • ⚠️ Use Stop Loss to limit risk
  • ⚠️ Do not trust promises of guaranteed profits
